Lake Garda
When talking about natural beauty on Lake Garda, Bosco Caproni is a place that doesn’t go unnoticed. Located near Arco, above the village of San Martino, this trail, nestled in lush greenery, is a true paradise where nature merges with history.
If you’re looking for a walk in the open air, Bosco Caproni will give you an unforgettable experience. Let’s embark on this magical trail together.
The Bosco Caproni loop trail is an easy, approximately 2-hour itinerary, perfect for families with children, friends, and couples in search of an outdoor adventure. With an elevation gain of 150 meters and a length of about 5 km, this walk is the perfect choice for a relaxing Sunday surrounded by nature.
The forest is dedicated to Gianni Caproni: the aeronautical engineer was born in Massone, a district of Arco, from which the trail begins, skirting the base of Monte Stivo. Thanks to an initiative by the Autonomous Province of Trento, you can now admire the fascinating quarry environment and explore the line of trenches.
The natural environment you pass through along the Bosco Caproni trail is truly spectacular. One of the most enchanting spots is the northernmost holm oak forest in Europe, flanked by species typical of the Mediterranean region, such as chestnut trees, olive trees, and wild cherry trees. A little further along, some interesting rock formations reveal the area’s glacial past and an even more ancient history, hinted at by fossil traces.
The most captivating attraction of Bosco Caproni, however, is man-made: the oolite quarries, open-air monuments that tell the story of the Vastré hill (also known as Monte Patone). Until the early 1900s, these mines produced the white stone of Arco, a statuary stone used for aqueduct pipes, church decorations, and sculptures (including the fountain in Piazza Duomo in Trento).
The Vastré oolite quarries also played a vital role during World War II: the inhabitants of Massone and San Martino used them to shelter from air raids.
Not far away, you’ll find the Trench Trail, a defensive system dug by the Austro-Hungarian command during World War I to control the Sarca Valley. In this intricate maze of dry-stone walls and ditches, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Sarca Valley, Lake Garda, and Arco Castle.
