Lake Garda - Sport & outdoor

The most beautiful via ferratas on Lake Garda

Lovers of via ferratas will be spoilt for choice in the Lake Garda area, with a selection of routes for all tastes and skill levels. Get your carabiners ready: with just a harness, a via ferrata set and a helmet, you’ll reach panoramic peaks, travel through amazing gorges, and discover passages that would otherwise be impossible to cross.

So, let’s discover the most beautiful via ferratas on Lake Garda together!

The most beautiful via ferratas on Lake Garda

Via Ferrata Cima Capi – Susatti

Let’s start with one of the best known via ferratas near Lake Garda, the route to Cima Capi along the Susatti via ferrata. Ideally, this route can be seen as an introduction to the world of via ferratas, since it is very simple (even though it shouldn’t be underestimated), and it offers exciting crossings and views to remember.

The itinerary starts from the village of Biacesa: follow path 470, crossing woods and caves from WWI times, until you reach the first cables of the route. As you climb, the views of the lake become more and more exciting, until you finally reach the vertical sections, exposed but always well equipped.

From Cima Capi, it is possible to continue in the direction of Cima Rocca, crossing another stretch of via ferrata. Alternatively, you can head back to Biacesa along path 460, following the short but pleasant via ferrata Foletti, with a stop at the panoramic Bivacco Arcioni.

Via Ferrata del Colodri

Another easy via ferrata is the one that allows you to reach Monte Colodri, starting from the Prabi car park in Arco. From here, after a short hike, you’ll find the first easy cables, also ideal for beginners, taking you just below the cross, easy to reach with a further 15 minutes hike. To get back to the starting point, take path 431 from the cross, then keep going following the signs to Arco.

Via Ferrata Rio Sallagoni

The Via Ferrata Rio Sallagoni is very special and unique, slightly more demanding than the previous ones – but not too much. The goal is not a peak: in fact, the route winds through a scenic gorge, which you ascend following the two side walls. Hikers will have to conquer iron rungs, steps, crossings on smooth but well-equipped walls, and even two Tibetan bridges. The starting point is the car park near the tamburello field located along the SP 85, just after Dro in the direction of Drena.

At the end of the Rio Sallagoni via ferrata, you will find yourself behind the beautiful Drena Castle, which can also be visited. From there, you can get back to the car park along a path that cuts through the hairpin bends in the direction of Dro.

Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri (Smugglers Path)

Let’s clarify from the start: this path is not a real via ferrata, but instead a mountaineering route for experts with equipment. Therefore, you’ll need good skills, as well as a rope, quickdraws and some anchor tape in addition to the usual harness, ferrata set and helmet.

This route is really very exposed, even though it develops mostly horizontally, and cabled sections are very rare and very difficult. In short, consider covering this route only if you have the necessary experience, training and equipment you need. If you are not sure, arrange a mountain guide to come with you. The route starts from the Old Porto del Ponale or from Pregasina.

Via Ferrata Signora delle Acque

Our roundup of the most beautiful via ferratas on Lake Garda ends with the Via Ferrata Signora delle Acque, close to the Sajant del Rio Ruzza waterfall. It is a recently built and moderately difficult route, with some overhanging passages. Therefore, it is not the ideal via ferrata for beginners.

It starts from Ballino, a hamlet near Fiavè – the route is short but spectacular, with the roar of the water in the background, between athletic passages and suspension bridges. The return takes place along a well-marked hiking trail.
