The bivouacs of Trentino: wild nature and freedom under the stars

bivacco

Trentino is a destination that surprises with its variety: between water and rock, lively villages and suspended silences, it offers unique experiences to those who love to live the mountains in an authentic way.
In this corner of Trentino, the bivouacs represent a privileged gateway to the wilder heart of the Brenta Dolomites and Monte Baldo: simple, yet captivating places where you can reconnect with nature and enjoy breathtaking views.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a walking enthusiast in search of an extraordinary adventure, the bivouacs of Upper Garda await you with their silence, starry skies, and a view that rewards every step taken to reach them.

What is a bivouac?

A bivouac is an unstaffed shelter, often located at high altitudes, accessible for free or with a voluntary donation. Generally made of wood or metal, it provides a simple but essential refuge: bunk beds, blankets, a table, and sometimes a wood stove. You won’t find modern comforts, but you’ll have everything needed for a night in the mountains. And that’s exactly what makes it special.

To reach Bivacco Costanzi from Riva del Garda, start by driving towards Val di Non, passing through Tuenno and continuing up to Malga Tuena. From there, the real hike begins — a challenging but spectacular trail along the Sentiero Costanzi, winding through forests and high-altitude pastures. The bivouac sits in an exceptional panoramic location, perfect for exploring the peaks of the Maddalene Group or simply enjoying a sunrise that paints the entire valley in shades of pink.

Bivacco Arcioni (Val di Concei – 1,600 m)

From the center of Riva del Garda, head up into the Val di Concei, continuing towards Lenzumo. A beautiful trail begins here, winding through larch and spruce woods, and leads to Bivacco Arcioni — a small wooden shelter nestled in peaceful nature. The bivouac is located near Malga Saval, a great starting point for panoramic hikes toward Monte Cadria, the highest peak in the area. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking a first bivouac experience, in a quiet but opportunity-rich environment.

Bivacco Bonvecchio (Cima Sassara – 2,790 m)

For those starting from Riva del Garda, the journey to Bivacco Bonvecchio begins with a drive toward Dimaro or Madonna di Campiglio. From there, the trail continues on foot along demanding paths that wind through the peaks of Val Gelada and the northern Brenta range. The bivouac, set in an isolated and evocative spot, is perfect for those seeking a true immersion in the wild mountains. The surrounding area offers majestic views and challenging summits, ideal for experienced hikers.

Bivacco Malga Prà da Giovo (1,543 m)

Bivacco Malga Prà

From Riva del Garda, head to the village of Sporminore, located in Val di Non. A quiet forest road begins here, leading to Bivacco Malga Prà da Giovo, nestled on the eastern slopes of the Campa Subgroup. Surrounded by woods and wide pastures, this bivouac is a perfect base for ascending Monte Bedole or the panoramic Cima Palon. Ideal for those seeking high-altitude tranquility and sweeping views over the valley below, it’s a hidden corner of the Brenta Group to be discovered with a slow pace and curious eyes.

An Experience to Live with Respect

Bivouacs are a valuable heritage, often maintained by volunteers or CAI (Italian Alpine Club) sections. That’s why it’s essential to treat them with respect: bring everything you need, leave the space clean, don’t leave behind any waste, and if you can, leave something for those who come after you. A candle, some firewood, a page written in the guestbook — small gestures that tell great mountain stories.

Sleep Among the Mountains, Wake Up by the Lake

A night in a bivouac is an experience that stays with you. And when you return, what could be better than unwinding on the shores of Lake Garda? Residence Centro Vela is the perfect starting (and ending) point for those dreaming of active days in the mountains and peaceful evenings with a lake view.
